Reliance Jio is the only Indian telecom brand to offer 4G LTE services with VoLTE (Voice Over LTE) support in India. To take on Reliance Jio, Airtel has signed a $60 million (Rs. 402 crore) pan-India deal with Nokia to bring VoLTE support for its network.
The report also says that “Airtel was piloting the technology in a few areas and after successful testing, is now looking at a bigger launch by giving a pan-India contract for IMS (IP multimedia system) solution to Nokia”. If this comes true, then Airtel will become second telecom brand to offer 4G LTE with VoLTE support in India.
Apart from Airtel, other networks like Vodafone and Idea Cellular are also expected to bring VoLTE services in India next year. Vodafone is testing its VoLTE services using Nokia’s IMS solution while Idea Cellular is still in talk with both Ericsson and Nokia to offer VoLTE service.
With the launch of 4G services in India, we have seen many smartphone vendors offering devices with 4G VoLTE support. According to a report, every 10 smartphones sold in India in Q3 2016 8 of them support VoLTE capability.
Stay tuned as we’ll update once 4G LTE with VoLTE services goes live for Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular.
